Tkay Maidza drops new music clip for her latest single ‘Follow Me’.
Tkay Maidza has just dropped the offical video for her melody-driven dance-pop anthem Follow Me; the third official single to be released from debut album TKAY, which is out now via Dew Process / UMA.
On Follow Me, Maidza infuses pop-perfect melodies and masterfully heavy grooves with a sweetly tender soulfulness. Co-written by Tkay, along with George Maple and Brooklyn dancehall king Dre Skull (Snoop Dogg, Jamie xx, Popcaan) who also produced the track, Follow Me was one of the first songs hewn that helped shape the direction and style of TKAY.
In a recent interview with triple j, Tkay illuminates the writing process; “It came really naturally, I was writing with George Maple and the melodies and everything they just made so much sense. It was cute and then it was uplifting, and really honest. I was just like, ‘this is literally so perfect… I would love to have this song for my album and what I imagine me making’ — that was a moment for me.”
The frenetic, strobe-lit video was directed and produced by renowned high-end fashion photographer Byron Spencer, who’s playful imagery has been featured in publications like Vogue, Dazed and Confused, iD, Nylon and Oyster. The clip was filmed on location in Australia, at Stockton Beach (NSW) and captures the energy of Tkay’s captivating live show, as well as adding weight to her growing reputation as a modern style icon.
Just last month, previously unreleased track ‘Glorious’ exclusively premiered on one of the final episodes of the smash-hit HBO series Girls after the show’s creator Lena Dunham made a personal request to use Tkay’s music as a fan of the rising Adelaide rap star.
Contributing music to one of the most iconic TV shows of her generation is just another incredible milestone in the amazing and still amazingly fresh career of Maidza. It now stands alongside being nominated for an MTV EMA Award and Best International Act at the 2016 BET Awards; being named #15 in Rolling Stone USA’s Best Pop Albums of 2016 list; collaborating on Martin Solveig’s summer club anthem ‘Do It Right’; and on top of all that releasing her critically acclaimed debut album TKAY in 2016 – which earned the coveted mantle of triple j Feature Album and spawned the huge tracks ‘Carry On (feat. Killer Mike)’, ‘Simulation’, ‘Tennies’ and ‘Follow Me.’ She was also recently the face of Nike’s Air Max campaign, which saw her take over billboards across the country.
