The tour will kick off in March and feature shows in Perth, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. He’ll be supported in Melbourne and Brisbane by rising rock act Moreton, who recently released their mysterious and brooding debut EP Specimen to critical acclaim and support from triple j, double j, and national community radio stations.
McMorrow stunned audiences earlier this year when he performed at the 2016 Splendour In The Grass festival, showcasing for the very first time material from his heralded new album, We Move– foreshadowing that record’s tremendous international success.
Now the folk-star-turned-r’n’b-maestro will bring his majestic voice and hit songs like ‘Higher Love,’ ‘We Don’t Eat,’ ‘Get Low,’ and ‘Rising Water’ to Australian audiences across the country – his first national tour since the widely celebrated 2014 Post Tropical tour. Written and recorded between Toronto, Dublin and London, We Move proved to be McMorrow’s most expansive, generous and ambitious record to date when it was released in September via Dew Process – following in the massive footsteps of 2010’s platinum-selling Early In The Morning and the acclaimed follow-up Post Tropical.
Far from the dense, protective imagery at the heart of Post Tropical, We Move is ultimately a record open in its portrait of anxiety and social unease. For McMorrow, the album’s writing was about celebrating mental fragility and how we move forward in life, rather than, “people listening to my songs and believing that I’m out in the forest all day long, thinking about trees. Because I’m actually at home, trying to convince myself to go out and get milk.”
The record was also essentially the realisation of McMorrow’s long held musical fantasy – “I grew up wanting to write songs like Neil Young but produce them like The Neptunes”. Working with producer’s like Nineteen85 (the brains behind Drake’s ‘Hotline Bling’), Two Inch Punch (Sam Smith, Years & Years), and Frank Dukes (Kanye West, Rihanna), he was able to build cinematic layers of sound and hip-hop beats as a foundation upon which he could float his iconic vocals, and deliver on that fantasy.
We Move is an album that continues a remarkable journey for the Dublin-born singer/songwriter, whose early work offered little clue as to the sounds and situations that would follow. It’s a remarkably assured collection that is sure to be judged as one of the most triumphant releases of the year.
